Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes

At 8:00 in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. Then, in our private transport, we will embark on a three-hour drive along the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo. Here, you will board the train to Aguas Calientes.

The train journey offers breathtaking views of the Urubamba river snaking through remote Andean villages and farmlands.

We will accommodate you in an ensuite hotel room in Aguas Calientes. You can spend the evening soaking in the thermal baths of Aguas Calientes or simply explore this small town.

Later at night, our representative will meet you at your hotel lobby to brief you on the following day’s itinerary.

Day 2Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Early in the morning, the hotel staff will hand you your snack box. We will then take a bus from Aguas Calientes to the Machu Picchu citadel. This will be a 25-minute drive up the hill.

Once at the main entrance of Machu Picchu, our guide will assist you in passing through the security control. Here, you will need to present your original passport and your entrance ticket.

We will then give you a two-hour guided tour of the citadel. On this tour, we will walk you through some of the main Incan ruins like the main plaza, ceremonial center, remains of temples, and farming terraces, among other sites.

After touring the archaeological sites, you will have some free time to explore the citadel. Alternatively, you can hike to the Sun Gate, which offers an exclusive view of the citadel. This view is exclusive during sunrise to those on the Inca Trail. It takes two hours to go back and forth from the citadel.

If you want to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, our local expert will assist you to the entrance. Please note that you will need to book the tickets to the respective mountains at the time of booking the tour, and it has an extra cost.

After visiting Machu Picchu, you will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes. Then, you will board the train back to Ollantaytambo train station. Our representative will meet you here and drive you back to Cusco.

Our journey to Machu Picchu was the highlight of our global travels, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation as one of the seven wonders of the world. We meticulously planned our visit, booking a private guided tour months in advance, and it was worth every effort. We were fortunate to have perfect weather, but I’d advise future visitors to pack ample sunscreen, as the sun can be intense. Before starting the tour, make use of the lockers available (for a fee) to store any non-essential items, allowing you to explore freely. Despite our tour lasting around three hours, every minute was enriching and worthwhile. Rumors of potential closures underscore the importance of visiting sooner rather than later to fully appreciate Machu Picchu’s magnificence. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and the importance of preservation in safeguarding our cultural heritage. (Translated from Spanish)

Nestled amidst the verdant jungle, Machu Picchu is a place of unparalleled beauty and wonder. The humidity of the surroundings, a surprise to me, only added to the mystique of this ancient site. However, it wasn’t just the ruins themselves that left me in awe; it was the panoramic vista surrounding them—an amphitheater of towering peaks and ethereal clouds drifting overhead. And let’s not forget the serene flow of the Urubamba river below, adding to the enchantment.
While the prescribed circuit limited our exploration somewhat, preventing us from seeing every corner of this extraordinary place, the experience was still worth every ounce of effort and expense. We were blessed with ideal weather during our late-March visit, with clear skies prevailing both days.
