  Cultural Facts

This tour will allow you to connect with the engineering and mystery of the Nazca culture:

  • Nazca Lines: Created by the Nazca culture (approximately between 100 BC and 800 AD), these enormous geoglyphs represent animal figures (hummingbird, monkey, spider, condor, dog), plants (tree), and geometric shapes drawn on the desert pampa. Their exact purpose remains an enigma, with theories ranging from a giant astronomical calendar and religious ritual centers related to water and fertility, to ceremonial pathways. Their large scale and precision, fully visible only from the air, make them a unique testimony and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.
  • Cantalloc Aqueducts: Also belonging to the Nazca culture, these aqueducts are a testament to the advanced hydraulic engineering developed for agriculture in the arid desert. They consist of a network of underground channels (puquios), lined with river stones and roofed with slabs or huarango logs, which captured underground water seepage. The characteristic spiral accesses (“eyes”) were used for cleaning and maintaining the channels. This system allowed the Nazca to develop prosperous agriculture in an extremely dry environment, and some of them are still in use today.
  • Nazca Culture: Flourished on the southern coast of Peru and is recognized not only for the lines and aqueducts but also for its high-quality polychrome pottery and complex rituals, which included the practice of trophy heads. Their ability to adapt to and modify a desert environment is one of their most important legacies.
