Many were unaware of the existence of Rainbow Mountains. Now, it is a popular attraction. The colours on the mountain was covered under a blanket of snow. Gradually when the snow started fading away, the enigmatic colours appeared.
These colours are deposits of minerals. The orange and yellow layers are from iron sulphite. Red shades are from deposits of iron oxide and the turquoise colour which often reflects as green or blue with the rays of the sun are sediments of chlorite. As the rainbow mountains gained attention from travellers, it rapidly got all the deserving attention making it a popular day trip from Cusco.
Rainbow Mountains of Cusco, are a part of Ausangate Mountain Range. The highest peak of Ausangate marks the southern skyline of Cusco. It is also sacred to locals. Andean people refer to this peak as “Apus”. Infact, it is so sacred that every year they have pilgrimage during the holy season of Qollyority.
The hike up to Rainbow Mountains of Vinicunca is scenic. Although, this could be somewhat challenging, because of the altitude, the hike up is well worth the effort. Also, you will get to see Andean camelids (Alpacas, Llamas and Vicuñas) grazing.
This is a high altitude hike, we recommend you to be well acclimatised in Cusco before doing the Rainbow Mountain Trek. Our guides are locals, from Cusco and are tourism professionals. Cusco Hotel Transfer
We will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco at 0430 in the morning. After picking you up, we will be driving southwards for two hours to a village called Pitumarca. At Pitumarca, we will stop for breakfast.
The route gets more interesting from here through valley and canyons to Chillihuani Community.
Rainbow Mountain Trek to Vinicunca begins here. Our local expert will give you a detailed briefing. We will then start trekking up to the summit of the Rainbow Mountains. It is one of the most scenic routes in southern Cusco. The route offers breathtaking views of “Apu” Ausangate, the sacred peak of the Andean people. You will also be passing through highland farm lands. The hike up to the summit of the Rainbow Mountain is roughly an hour and twenty minutes.
Once we reach the summit, you will have enough time to explore the beauty, click photos and immerse yourself in the tranquility at 5200 metres above the sea level.
We will then gradually start descending back to the base camp, where we started the trek. Upon reaching here we will stop for lunch before driving back to Cusco.
