Planning a trip to Tambopata could rather be confusing. There are plenty of information you can find online. Many articles about different excursions, lodges and operators. Tambopata is in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. Puerto Maldonado is the nearest major city and the gateway to Tambopata.
Taricaya Ecological Reserve Tour takes you to one of the most interesting parts of the Peruvian Amazon. This place harbours some of the wildest, least impacted habitats in the Amazon and the world. It is on the bucket list of many wild life lovers. This is one of the “must-see” nature destinations in Peru.
Puerto Maldonado Airport Transfer
Depending On Your Flight Time
Our representative will be meeting you at the airport upon arrival and will be transferring you to our local office in Puerto Maldonado. You can sort out your bags so you can carry only what you would be needing during the tour. We have luggage storage facility at our office and you can securely leave your bags there.
We will then drive to Puerto de Capitanía boat pier where you will be boarding the boat for a 40 minutes ride to Corto Maltes Amazon lodge on Made de Dios river.
Upon docking in on the shores of Corto Maltes Amazon lodge, the staff will be welcoming you with a natural fruit soda which is exclusive here. Your guide will then brief you about the itinerary.
Lunch will be served here.
At 0330 PM, our guide will give you a tour. On this tour you will see he tropical trees, medicinal plants and other exuberant nature.
You will then be visiting Shiringuero camp, one of the most important economic activities in the Madre de Dios region. Here you will be visiting the camp where they extract rubber (latex).
After the tour, you will be back in the lodge. You can relax in the pool or in the hammock by sipping in an exotic cocktail from the bar. You can also have a massage or see the sunset in the pier.
At around 0700 PM, we will do a little night safari to try and spot some alligators in their natural habitat.
We wake up at 5:30 a.m. to have a coffee or hot infusion before leaving for Lake Sandoval. The guide will deliver a bag with breakfast that will be consumed during the excursion to Lake Sandoval.
06:00 a.m. After sailing about 20 minutes along the Madre de Dios river, we arrive at the pier of Lake Sandoval. With a 3 km trek through the lush vegetation of the tropical forest we enter the territory of the Tambopata National Reserve. You can admire gigantic trees, snakes, monkeys (wasitas, cotomonos or cappuccinos), birds (highlighting the shanshos, kingfishers and anhingas). Once in Lake Sandoval we will sail in small rowing boats in search of the river wolves. We can also observe a wide variety of animals such as reptiles, mammals and birds is their natural state. When the guide finds a suitable place and while observing nature at its best we can consume our breakfast.
On the way back we will have in mind to have our complete belongings and we will begin the walk back to the pier of Lake Sandoval.
Optional Monkey Island:
This activity will be done depending on the season and according to the guide’s criteria. There are moments in the season that because of the floods it is practically impossible to enter and walk the island. On the other hand there are times of the season when it is necessary to leave the monkeys without interruption of the visit of tourists to help in their reproduction and in their life in the wild.
These animals are already accustomed to tourist visits and can get very close to people so we must always follow the guide’s instructions.
1:30 p.m. We will return to the lodge for lunch.
Visit to the tower and chestnut camp:
3:30 p.m. We will visit one of the two towers that Corto Maltes Amazonía has in its facilities. One is 20 meters high and the other 42 meters high. Both are designed for sighting birds and other species from above and you can also enjoy a beautiful sunset (the guide will coordinate which one to visit depending on the preference of the passengers). Visit to a chestnut camp. The chestnut (or Brazil nut, as it is known worldwide) is another of the most important economic activities in the Madre de Dios region.
Free time to enjoy the pool or a massage, drink something refreshing in our bar or visit our boutique.

09: 00h After about 20 minutes of crossing the river we will visit a farm. It is a land taken care of by a local family. Here we will recognize and even taste different tropical fruits of the season and other native products (cocoa, banana, cocona, tree bread, noni, cassava, lime …). This place belongs to a typical rural family in this area, who keep very carefully and without chemicals some native plants that grow naturally and then take to the main market of Puerto Maldonado for consumption. Once the visit is over we will return to take the boat and after about 20 minutes we will arrive at the Machiguenga native family.

12: 00h We will visit a family of Machiguenga natives, one of the many ethnic groups that exist in the Peruvian Amazon, who will show us part of the cultural value of their ancestors, their language and customs, their clothes, their hunting gear, their handicrafts and music played during the ayahuasca ceremony. They will teach us how they take advantage of natural products to make tools, their homes, dresses and ornaments, all of them important for their daily life.
13: 00h: Without leaving the land of the Machiguenga ethnic family, in a typical construction, we will have lunch a native dish of the jungle.
14:00 Return to the lodge to rest and have free time to visit the boutique, cool off in the pool, have a cocktail at the bar or have a relaxing massage.

8:30 a.m. Boat trip (45 minutes) to the Animal Rescue Biological Center. This project, with headquarters in the United Kingdom, has the collaboration of universities around the world, from which volunteer students arrive to collaborate in the care and reintroduction of injured or rescued animals in many cases to be reinserted into their livelihoods. . Here we can observe different species of animals: jaguar, varieties of monkeys, tapir, peccary and some exotic birds such as the trumpeter. These animals are cared for in order to cure them and return them to their natural environment, although there are some animals that can no longer be reintroduced into their natural habitat for various reasons. The project has a Canopy Walk (a suspension bridge that rises to 42 m high and 90 m long, for bird monitoring and wildlife observation).
The walk along an open path will last approximately 30 minutes in the primary forest to the Canopy-Walk. After climbing the first tower of 14m, we walk on the suspension bridge (Canopy Walk), ascending to a platform 42 m high from where you can enjoy an extraordinary view at the level of the tops of the tallest trees in the jungle.

Around 13:30 Return to the Lodge for lunch and free afternoon to enjoy the recreational activities of the lodge in coordination with your guide.

8:00 pm Dinner.
We wake up at 5:30 a.m. to have a coffee or hot infusion before leaving for a walk of approximately 20 minutes until you reach the parrot collpa, where you can observe between 3 to 5 species of parrots, who go down to eat a special clay which is found in some areas of this region. This is indispensable for bird metabolism and a really wonderful and exciting color show.

Visit the local market and return to the airport:
After breakfast you will be transferred to the city of Puerto Maldonado on our boats.
In Puerto Capitanía, the mobility will be waiting for you to go to our office, then continue towards the local market where a small tour will take place with an average duration of 15 to 20 minutes where you can see the different local products from which the population It is supplied. After this visit, we will continue on our way to the airport to check in their respective flights.
The order and schedules of the excursions can be modified in accordance with your guide, and, as deemed convenient, through coordination with the administration, considering the physical condition of the passengers and the weather at the time.
